The most expensive mistake in this industry happens quietly, every day: someone inherits a box of jewelry, takes it to a “we buy gold” counter, and watches an Art Deco Cartier brooch get priced by weight — like it was a broken chain. The metal was worth hundreds. The brooch was worth many times that. Nobody at that counter knew, or wanted to know.

Here’s how estate jewelry is actually valued, so that never happens to you.

Three Layers of Value

Every estate piece has up to three stacked values, and a proper appraisal checks all of them:

• Intrinsic value — the metal weight and the stones. This is the floor, never the ceiling.
• Maker value — a signature from Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bvlgari, David Webb, or Georg Jensen puts a piece into the collector market, where it trades well above its materials. Even a simple signed gold band outprices its melt weight.
• Period value — craftsmanship from recognizable eras: Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro. Original period settings, hand engraving, old-cut diamonds. Collectors pay for the era, and an intact original setting is often worth more than the “upgrade” a modern jeweler would suggest.

The Clues That Change the Number

Before anything hits a scale, an estate specialist looks for: maker’s marks and hallmarks (often tiny, inside bands or on clasps), old-cut diamonds (European cuts and mine cuts, prized in original settings), original fitted boxes and paperwork, and construction details — hand-made galleries, millegrain edges, platinum-over-gold work — that date a piece and prove quality.
